Your library, on the air.
VirtualChannels turns your own movies, shows, and IPTV sources into real TV channels — served to Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, and Channels DVR as a standard HDHomeRun tuner. Version 2.0 is the biggest release yet: it now runs in Docker, transcodes on whatever hardware you've got, and ships a guide that never goes dark.
Runs anywhere now.
The most-requested feature, shipped. VirtualChannels runs headless as a Docker container with a full web interface — the same sources, settings, and guide tools you have on the Mac, from any browser. The desktop app and the server share one engine, so a change in either takes effect immediately, with no restart.
Transcodes on whatever you've got.
Streaming picks the fastest path your machine actually has, and lets you override it.
- ›Auto — detects and uses the best engine available.
- ›iGPU (VAAPI) — Intel and AMD integrated graphics.
- ›GPU (NVENC) — NVIDIA cards.
- ›Software — predictable everywhere. On the Mac, the built-in Apple engine keeps doing what it does best.
A guide that never goes dark.
Where most of your bug reports lived — and where most of 2.0 went.
- ›Event channels stop showing blank rows. When a source only publishes a program once a game starts, the guide fills the gaps with clean half-hour placeholders — the way the big DVR apps do.
- ›HDHomeRun guides no longer die silently. Your tuner's guide token rotates on its own; VirtualChannels re-derives it on every discovery, and says so out loud when a guide does fail.
- ›Channel numbers hold still. Reorder a playlist or run a sync — your numbers don't shuffle underneath your media server anymore.
- ›More data, cleaner data. Richer XMLTV output, and automatic repair of garbled text from some providers.
See every tuner, live.
The tuner screen shows every physical tuner on your HDHomeRun — what it's carrying, who's watching, and its signal strength — refreshed in real time. And Activity is a real record now: it survives restarts, keeps 30 days of history, and opens with day-over-day counts and a 24-hour chart of tunes, scans, syncs, and errors.
Watch before a client tunes.
Open the Guide, pick a channel, and preview it right in the app — real video, straight from the tuner — so you can confirm a source is healthy without firing up Plex on another device.
Everything is yours to change.
- ›Add, remove, edit, enable, or disable any source — folders, HDHomeRun tuners, and external playlists alike. A switched-off source leaves the lineup cleanly and says so everywhere a number appears.
- ›Pick your re-sync interval — every 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, or 24 hours, on both the Mac and the server.
- ›Factory reset — start completely fresh whenever you want. Your media files are never touched.
